India and African nations are strengthening their energy partnership with a renewed focus on accelerating the transition to renewable power and modernising electricity infrastructure. The development was highlighted during a high-level India–Africa partnership meeting in New Delhi, where India’s Power Minister Manohar Lal underscored the importance of long-term collaboration between the two regions.
Home to nearly one-third of the global population, India and Africa are aligning their efforts beyond traditional resource exchange, aiming instead for structural transformation in the energy sector. Key areas of cooperation include expanding renewable energy capacity, upgrading power grids, developing energy storage systems, and enhancing the flexibility and resilience of electricity networks.
The partnership also emphasises institutional strengthening through skill development, knowledge sharing, and capacity building across energy-related organisations. Reliable and affordable energy access remains central to the initiative, as it directly supports economic growth and improves living standards.
India has also reiterated its commitment to the global “One Sun, One World, One Grid” initiative, which seeks to enable cross-border solar energy sharing through an interconnected global grid system.
African representatives highlighted their focus on developing bankable infrastructure projects, expanding transmission networks, and attracting long-term investments. Additionally, integrated resource management, particularly in water and energy systems, has been identified as a priority for sustainable development.
Experts view this growing cooperation as part of a broader shift among emerging economies toward collaborative, clean energy transitions, driven by shared goals of sustainability, infrastructure development, and inclusive growth.
