One Electric, an Indian EV firm, begins manufacturing in Kenya, plans further expansion in Africa

One Electric, a Mumbai-based electric two-wheeler firm, has begun manufacture of its EV bikes in Kenya as part of a bigger foreign development strategy.

According to a source, One Electric has formed a joint venture with a Kenyan auto manufacturing business to commence manufacture of its Kridn motorbikes. For the time being, the components, technology, and technical know-how are coming from India.

The startup's ability to develop operations in Africa more quickly and offer localised after-sales support will be aided by local manufacturing. According to the story, the company is also planning to begin production at a second factory in Kenya, with that plant's first products expected in two months.

One Electric's CEO, Gaurav Uppal, was quoted as stating, "Our engineers are supervising the training and production of our motorcycles in Kenya to ensure our standards." The firm was on target to finish the first manufacturing batch in less than two weeks, the CEO continued.

According to the CEO, the move is part of the startup's aspirations to establish additional manufacturing centres across Africa and Asia. According to Uppal, the EV maker will begin localization in stages, based on the feasibility of the local industry, beginning with parts such as handlebars, stands, and carriers. The firm will enhance its localization in Kenya once the regional ecosystem matures.

By the end of the year, the business also intends to establish a battery production facility in Africa. One Electric has already begun discussions with local partners in order to grow beyond Africa and into other areas, such as South America and Southeast Asia.

One Electric, a 2019 startup, produces four vehicles as part of their line of commuter bikes called Kridn. One Electric claims to have sold vehicles in six different nations and has joined together with Indian original equipment manufacturers to produce electric bikes and source parts.

While the popularity of ebikes has not yet reached that of escooters, certain Indian OEMs do produce electric bikes, notably Ultraviolette, Yulu, and Kabira Mobility. Ola Electric is slated to join the club in 2024 with a set of four bikes that it just announced.
