Switch Mobility plans to export models from India to other emerging markets

Switch Mobility entered the Indian passenger mobility market this year with the EiV 12 single-decker bus and, more recently, the EiV 22 electric double-decker. While the company is currently focusing on its current two electric models, it intends to use India as a manufacturing hub for vehicles for other developing markets.

"We will focus on production in India and exporting to similar growing regions. We're interested in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa," stated Mahesh Babu, CEO of Switch Mobility India.

According to Mahesh Babu, Switch's parent company Ashok Leyland has over 50 touch points in global markets, which Switch is attempting to leverage in order to export its models from India in the future.

“As you are aware, Ashok Leyland has over 50 touch points outside of the nation, which we will utilise. Some (models) will travel from India. We have facilities in the United Kingdom and Spain, as you are aware. Vehicles with left-hand drive will depart Spain for developed markets. For developed markets, the right-hand drive will be obtained from a UK manufacturing location. For developing nations like India, Products will be shipped from India to those nations,” he added.

Switch Mobility, formerly known as Optare, already has a manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom, and the company is breaking ground on a new plant in Spain. The Spanish facility is scheduled to open next year.

Switch India presently manufactures electric buses at Ashok Leyland's Ennore plant in Tamil Nadu, but according to sources, the company is considering constructing an independent manufacturing site to produce electric buses and light commercial vehicles in the future. The lineup will begin.

The firm is now developing an electrification strategy for the LCV market, with future ambitions to provide electrification alternatives for CVs weighing up to 7.5 tonnes. The electric variant of the Ashok Leyland Dost is listed on the company's website as part of its LCV fleet, though the models have yet to hit the market.
