Signing an MoU to Promote Mechanical Recycling in India, LyondellBasell and Shakti Plastic Industries

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed by LyondellBasell and Shakti Plastic Industries to promote mechanical recycling in India.

The biggest plastic scrap converter and garbage gathering company in India, Shakti Plastic Industries, and LyondellBasell have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a joint project to construct and run an entirely automated mechanical recycling plant there. The facility is designed to handle post-consumer rigid packaging waste and generate 50.000 tonnes of recycled polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) annually, which is equal to the amount of single-use plastic waste generated by 12.5 million people. The next facility, which is anticipated to open at the end of 2024, will grow to be India's biggest mechanical recycling plant. In order to fulfil the rising demand for recovered polymer materials from converters and brand owners in India, LyondellBasell will market the recycled goods created by this joint project, adding volume to its Circulen Recover portfolio of current PE and PP materials.

"We can solve the issue of plastic waste in India, the second most populous nation in the world, thanks to the planned joint venture, which will also enable us to increase the number of circular polymer products we provide there," says Yvonne van der Laan, LyondellBasell Executive Vice President, Circular and Low Carbon Solutions."The creation of a novel system that can be scaled as the circular economy develops would be made possible by combining our respective expertise with that of Shakti Plastic Industries."

The joint venture will make use of each partner's advantages once it is created.Shakti Plastic Industries would give structure and formality to the waste collection process in order to gather resources for the new enterprise with the establishment of a recycling infrastructure in India. In India, LyondellBasell will put to use its extensive experience in product design, long-standing leadership in cutting-edge plastic manufacturing technologies, and solid understanding of the polymer markets.

"The circular economy will gradually become a crucial component of the Indian plastic value chain, necessitating solutions throughout the value chain to create a sustainable plastic recycling industry."says Rahul V. Podaar, Managing Director of Shakti Plastic Industries."We will keep looking for chances to develop in the future as we work to establish ourselves as a valuable player in the circular economy. We will take considerable steps to recycle stiff plastic waste in India along with LyondellBasell, supporting the government's initiative to employ recycled plastic in packaging applications." "The circular economy will gradually become a crucial component of the Indian plastic value chain, necessitating solutions throughout the value chain to create a sustainable plastic recycling industry."
