Indias Natural Gas Production Grows Along With Gas-Based Generation

The nation’s natural gas production in April grew 5.10 percent to 2,663 Million Standard Cubic Meter (MMSCM) as compared to the corresponding month of the last financial year, mainly due to increased production from offshore basins operated by state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), fresh data sourced from the oil ministry showed.

Also, electricity generation from gas-based power plants in the country reported a 19.31 percent increase at 4,607 Million Unit (MU) on the back of increased availability. Domestic natural gas supply to private and government-owned gas-based power plants increased to 33.13 Million Standard Cubic Meter/Day (MMSCMD) in April 2018 as compared to 28.14 MMSCMD supplied in the corresponding month.

The average Plant Load Factor (PLF) of natural gas power plants stood at 25.83 percent in April 2018 as compared to 21.35 percent recorded in the corresponding month a year ago. As domestic production of natural gas is not sufficient to meet the country’s demand, the government allocates domestically produced gas based on Domestic Gas Allocation Policy. The power sector falls fifth in the priority.

ONGC’s natural gas production in April increased 10.11 percent to 1,972 MMSCM mainly due to better performance of the company’s onshore and offshore sites. Production from onshore sites rose to 471 MMSCM in April from 463 MMSCM in the corresponding month a year ago. The marginal increase is attributable to rise in production from basins in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan. Gas production fell from ONGC’s basins in Assam, Gujarat, and Tripura.

The company’s domestic offshore production increased to 1,501 MMSCM in April due to a 13 percent increase in production from basins in the Western Offshore to 1,439 MMSCM. ONGC’s gas production from Eastern Offshore increased by 10 MMSCM to 62.53 MMSCM in the month.

Oil India, the second-largest state-run upstream firm, recorded an 8.29 percent fall in production in April to 221 MMSCM due to the temporary suspension of supply to North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) for about 8 days due to the cleaning of their delivery line by the transporter Assam Gas Company (AGCL).

Also, boosting of gas by Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) suffered due to unscheduled maintenance work at their Namrup-II & III plants, Oil ministry said in a report. OIL’s gas production fell from Assam basins to 202 MMSCM, while production from basins in Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan increased marginally in April.
