Government to create mega trade events in key sectors of the industry to boost Indian exports: Commerce Secretary

Rita Teaotia, Secretary - Commerce, Government of India has said that the government and the department is planning Mega trade shows for key sectors in the country to create more export opportunities for Indian exporters in coming years. She made this announcement while announcing the first ever Mega trade show for Food & Beverages sector, Indus Food, which the Ministry of Commerce has partnered with Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI).

Indus Food will be held on January 18 and 19, 2018 at Exposition Mart, Greater Noida. She said that the government is committed to support the export industry in the country. After two consecutive years of export decline, Indian exports have started looking up in the last nine months, she said. The new foreign trade policy will be announced by this September, she added.

Explaining the reasons for setting up Mega trade shows within India, Teaotia said that it is time we changed the strategy of sending Indian exporters to attend shows abroad and rather create such trade events here so that foreign buyers can come and see for themselves the diverse product offerings India has and interact with large number of sellers.

“We have enormous diversity in agriculture sector. In some products we are market leaders… India should start positioning itself as a place to do business in agri and processed food products,” she said.

The organizers are expecting participation of around 400 overseas buyers for the first ever Mega show.

Commenting on the vision behind the proposed trade show, Mohit Singla, Chairman, TPCI said, “In spite of such a huge potential, India lacked a platform of its own which highlights the food production capacities of the country. Indus Food puts India on the international food show map with a personalized and a comprehensive ecosystem for buyers and sellers on the lines of the globally established trade shows like SIAL, Anuga, Gulfood, etc.”
