The Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration on matters relating to the promotion of trade in pharmaceuticals with the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI).

The MoU was agreed at the just-ended International Exhibition for Pharma and Healthcare (IPHEX) in Mumbai, India, which sought to showcase to the world affordable and quality Indian pharmaceutical products.

Nana Appiagyei Dankawoso I, Second Vice President of the GNCCI and MD, M&G Insurance Brokers, said the MoU will provide a framework within which Pharmexcil and GNCCI will collaborate in all matters relating to the promotion of trade in pharmaceuticals and generic medicines between the two countries.

He said it confirms a shared intention by the Indian pharmaceutical industry to work together with other relevant professional partners.

“It also establishes a basis to further develop the relationship and achieve greater collaboration,” Nana Dankawoso I explained.

He said both countries will share information on Government policies, quality issues and drug regulatory updates relating to the generic drugs market. He said the collaboration will create better understanding between the two countries, leading to growth in pharmaceutical exports in each country.

Dr. P.V. Appaji, Director-General, Pharmexcil, said it is the desire of India to further strengthen its relationship with Ghana in the field of pharmaceuticals, generic medicine and healthcare.
He said both parties will share a common commitment to develop bilateral trade and commerce, promote investments including economic progress, mutual business interests and prosperity in a peaceful, stable and secure global environment.

Mrs. Doris Attafuah, Managing Pharmacist, VicDoris Pharmaceuticals, a representative from Ghana, said by this MoU Ghanaians stand to gain access to quality and affordable products from Indian companies.

She said the Indian pharmaceutical industry has gone through various stages in pharmaceutical production, which need to be studied by Ghana and Africa in general.

The Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India was set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India for promoting the export of drugs, pharmaceuticals, homeopathy, Ayurvedic and herbal medicines, allied products and related services in the global arena. Pharmexcil is mandated to help its members achieve excellence in exports and help overseas buyers to find suitable trade partners from the Indian pharmaceutical industry.
