Stamping their undisputed superiority over nearest competitors in the Indian subcontinent, global giants like Alstom and GE are all set to bag contracts for setting up of multi-crore diesel and electric locomotive factories in Marhora and Madhepura in Bihar entailing a staggering investment worth Rs. 40,000cr. The mega projects are marking the first major FDI in rail projects and also touted as the first big ticket projects under 'Make in India' initiative in the public transporter. GE and Alstom are being handed over the high value contracts acceptance letters by Railways for manufacturing of 1,000 diesel locomotives and 800 electric locomotives over the next 11 years. In the process, the US multinational GE, which has emerged as the lowest bidder for the Rs 1,200cr Marhora diesel locomotive factories, is expected to manufacture the 1,000 locomotives over 10 years. While 100 locomotives will be imported, rest will be manufactured at Marhora as part of the 'Make in India' initiative. French major Alstom, the lowest bidder for the Rs. 1,000cr Madhepura electric locomotive factory will manufacture 800 high power electric locomotives locos in the next 11 years to manufacture 12,000 HP electric locomotives meant to be used for heavy haulage, said official sources.
