Corporation to set up 37 more biogas plants

With the tenure of the current Corporation council set to end soon and local body elections round the corner, the ruling combine at the civic body is scampering to at least start off a few more initiatives as part of its My City, Beautiful City waste management programme.

One of the key initiatives as part of this is the setting up of biogas plants in 37 locations across the city.

Out of these, 29 are government schools. Plants of 75-kg capacity will be set up in these schools. n addition, biogas plants will be installed at a few government hospitals, including Fort Hospital, Poonthura hospital and at the T.B. Centre in General Hospital. These plants are of 300-kg capacity. A 1,000-kg capacity plant will be installed in the Thampanoor ward and plants of 300-kg each at Mannanthala, Mudavanmugal community hall, police quarters at Kowdiar and at NGO quarters at Arannur. The annual maintenance contract for three biogas plants at the Palayam, Peroorkada and Sreekaryam markets has expired recently.

There has been some delay in renewing these contracts as the Health Officer had insisted that the engineering section has to take care of it, instead of the health section. This stand was recently overruled by the Corporation Secretary, paving the way for renewal of the contract. The Corporation’s clean wards initiative might not fulfil the objective of declaring all the wards of the local body clean during the tenure of this council.

Last week, 11 more wards were declared as clean, taking the total number of such wards to 23. But there have been voices of protest from the Opposition.
