Indian plastic industry at a glance

In 1957, Indian plastics industry had made a promising beginning with the production of polystyrene. Since then significant progress has been made, and the industry has grown and diversified rapidly. The industry hosts more than 2,000 exporters. It employs about 4 million people and comprises more than 30,000 processing units, 85-90 percent of which are small and medium-sized enterprises.

• Between April-October 2018, plastics export from India stood at US$ 3.47 billion out of which exports of raw plastic material stood at US$ 2.62 billion.
• Through April to October 2018, top five importers of Indian plastic products were China (US$ 553.42 million), US (US$ 234.76 million), Italy (US$ 188.31 million), Bangladesh PR (US$ 168.33 million) and UAE (US$ 159.02 million).
• India produces and exports a wide range of raw materials, plastic-molded extruded goods, polyester films, molded / soft luggage items, writing instruments, plastic woven sacks and bags, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), leather cloth and sheeting, packaging, consumer goods, sanitary fittings, electrical accessories, laboratory / medical surgical ware, tarpaulins, laminates, fishnets, travel ware, and others.
• Country’s plastics industry offers excellent potential in terms of capacity, infrastructure and skilled manpower. The main driving force is large number of polymer producers, and plastic process machinery and mould manufacturers in the country.
• Plastic processors dependency on imports has reduced. Raw materials are manufactured domestically, including polypropylene, high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene and PVC.
 
India is ready to have 18 plastic parks and Government will be investing Rs 40 crore (US$ 6.2 million) to increase the domestic production of plastics. This will achieve environmentally sustainable growth and increase employment. The Plastics Export Promotion Council is the apex government body responsible for the promotion of plastic exports. PLEXCONCIL members comprise large-/medium-/small-scale manufacturers and exporters. 
 
This body extends its support to exporters by participating in international trade fairs, exploring new markets, organising buyer- seller meets both in India and overseas, and engaging in various other promotion and need- based activities.
