Indian company enters Russian market of implants for traumatology and orthopaedics

Moscow: Meril Life Sciences has become the first Indian manufacturer of high-tech implants for traumatology and orthopaedics to begin supply to Russia. The system of primary knee joint arthroplasty, entitled Freedom Total Knee, will be supplied to a number of medical institutions. It was presented to Russian doctors in February

2017 during their visit to India at Meril’s production site in Vapi, Gujarat.

Indian traumatologists and orthopaedists will present their experience of using the Freedom Total Knee system at the Eurasian Orthopaedic Forum that will take place in Moscow on 29-30 June 2017.

In February, a delegation of traumatologists and orthopaedists from Russia visited Meril’s technology park and academy, where doctors are trained, and production sites.

Meril hosts under one roof the production facilities and research work on the development of technologies in several capacious directions: orthopaedics, cardiovascular surgery, endovideosurgery and diagnostic laboratory equipment.

According to Russian doctors, who visited Meril facilities, the strong side of Meril’s orthopaedic area is full vertical integration for the manufacture of implants of joints, spine and devices for traumatology.

The Russian doctors’ attention was also drawn to the Meril Academy, equipped with a variety of equipment for surgeons and technicians, including simulators for studying orthopaedics, cardiology, laparoscopy, surgery and neurology; virtual hybrid operating room with touch-technologies and 3D-models.

Professor Denis Davydov, a member of the Russian delegation of doctors visiting Meril facilities, said, “During the meeting, it was possible to exchange experience productively with the specialists of Meril. Indian doctors presented a modern and very successful system of primary knee joint arthroplasty, entitled Freedom Total Knee, which had already been used at an international level since 2010. To produce such systems, Meril purchased the business and production capacities of the famous American manufacturer Maxx-Medical, and then localized production in India. During the visit we visited this enterprise and saw its work.”

Meril was founded in 2007. The company, with current staff strength of 2,500 employees, conducts business in more than 100 countries and receives 50 percent of its revenue from the export of high-tech medical products to Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and the Asia Pacific.

“The Russian medical market is very important for us, as it is one of the largest and fastest growing in the world,” said Inamdar Upendra, a representative of Meril in Russia and Belarus.

“Meril has been presenting cardiology products in Russia since 2010, and now begins delivering world-class orthopaedic implants at an affordable price,” said Upendra.

According to Upendra, in June, at the Eurasian Orthopaedic Forum, Indian doctors will share the clinical experience of applying the Freedom Total Knee system, including difficult cases, and discuss the start of operations using this system in Russian hospitals.

“In addition, Meril plans to present its existing and new products to the EOF. And in the long term we hope for the participation of Russian doctors in Indian and international training events, such as, for example, the orthopaedic master class at Meril’s Academy, where representatives from all over the world gather,” Upendra added.

Upendra further said that Meril is actively looking for opportunities to localize the production of some medical equipment from its range in Russia.

The Eurasian Orthopaedic Forum is organised by Russian military and civilian doctors with the support of the Russian Ministry of Health. The multidisciplinary scientific and practical programme will cover about 20 directions — from traumatology and orthopaedics, radiation diagnostics, rheumatology, oncology to disaster medicine and healthcare organization.

The forum is open to all medical professionals, government officials and business from the countries of Eurasia. Particular attention will be paid to the achievements of China, India, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. There will also be an exhibition of medical products and equipment for traumatology and orthopaedics, as well as a number of related directions, according to a statement.
