Indian Govt plans $1 billion in exports of alcoholic drinks in the coming years

The government intends to promote both Indian alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in the foreign markets and is targeting USD one billion (approximately Rs 8,000 crore) in exports in the next few years due to the significant growth in global demand for Indian spirits.

According to the Agriculture & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, an agency of the commerce ministry, India presently holds the 40th position globally in terms of exports of alcoholic beverages. Estimates indicate that the nation has enormous untapped export potential.

As a component of the 'Make in India' campaign, the authority aims to boost the export of Indian spirits to important international markets.

It "is potentially eyeing USD 1 billion in export revenue over the next few years," according to a statement it released on Wednesday.

About Rs 2,200 crore worth of alcoholic beverages were exported from the nation in 2023–2024. India, Tanzania, Angola, Kenya, Rwanda, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates are among the top travel destinations.

Furthermore, as per APEDA, Diageo India (United Spirits Ltd.) intends to launch "Godawan" in the United Kingdom. This is a single-malt whisky from Rajasthan.

Regarding the USD $1 billion goal, Vinod Giri, Director General of the Brewers Association of India, said that there is a great deal of potential for Indian products in the various nations.

India will become known for producing high-quality whisky, but the bulk of the country's output will come from more reasonably priced and more agreeable-to-the-taste products like premium rum and Indian whiskies, the expert added. financially
Giri went on to say that the US, Africa, and Europe have enormous export potential.

He recommended that the federal government press state governments to incorporate export promotion into their state excise laws.
