India Prepares for Trade Council Meetings With Kenya, Tanzania to Push Exports

India is getting ready for joint trade council meetings with Kenya and Tanzania, two of its biggest trading partners in Africa, with the goal of increasing its trade with African countries to $200 billion by 2030. In order to discuss current obstacles and prospects for the JTC meetings with Kenya and Tanzania, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is working with industry councils as well as other ministries and departments. Africa is a significant market because it has a lot of promise and might support its diversification efforts. Kenya and Tanzania are both promising economies with a lot of room for growth in trade and investment provided they receive focused attention. Indian exporters in the two African nations confront a number of general issues, such as standards and regulations implemented for different sectors that hinder imports and procedural barriers that cause administrative and bureaucratic delays.

In 2023–2024, bilateral trade between India and Tanzania reached $7.9 billion, a 22% increase from the previous year. According to a statement released earlier this year by the Indian High Commission in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is now India’s second-largest trading partner in Africa, up from third place the year before. According to the statement, India exports vital goods like tractors, industrial gear, and petroleum products, all of which support economic expansion and industrialisation. The value of India's imports and exports to Kenya in 2023–2024 was $176.34 million and $3.35 billion, respectively. Similar to Tanzania, India exports petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, machinery, cereals, sugars, and confections, as well as plastics and articles, cars, electrical gear and equipment, organic chemicals, and paper and paperboard to Kenya.
