As part of energy-saving initiatives, thousands of streetlights in the five Tambaram Corporation zones are switching from traditional to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. The project's goal was to replace all 37,803 streetlights with LED bulbs that were deployed in various lighting configurations.

A senior Tambaram Corporation official stated that 37,803 of the 42,902 streetlights deployed across the 70 divisions were scheduled for replacement with LED bulbs. T.M. Anbarasan, the Minister for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Alandur MLA, launched the ₹48.33 crore initiative in August to convert traditional streetlights to LED ones. The State Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (SUIDF) was in charge of carrying it out. 20,862 conventional bulbs have been replaced with LED ones as part of this project. In addition, the State government has approved ₹6.48 crore for the replacement of 3,634 LED lightbulbs in the designated areas where new streetlights would be erected.

In the five zones—Pampal with 1,903 LED bulbs, Pallavaram with 6,526 LEDs, Sembakkam with 4,525 LEDs, Perungalathur with 5,935 LEDs, and Tambaram East with 1,973 LEDs—the Tambaram Corporation has finished replacing streetlights with conventional bulbs.

According to a senior official of the local authority, the remaining 16,941 streetlights out of the total of 37,803 lights will have their LED bulbs fixed in a gradual manner by the end of this year in all five zones and bus route roads. The official stated that the 3,634 new LED streetlights would also be placed shortly.
