Under the Street Lighting National Programme, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture business of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) of the Ministry of Power, has installed more than 1.28 crore LED street lights across 29 States and UTs. RK Singh, the Union Minister of Power, New & Renewable Energy, provided this information to the Parliament on Thursday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the commencement of the Street Lighting National Programme, which is being carried out by EESL and aims to replace outdated street lights with intelligent, energy-efficient LED street lights. It is a voluntary programme that is being carried out all over the nation.
In accordance with the project, EESL has set a goal of replacing the estimated 1.34 crore conventional street lights in all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Gramme Panchayats (GPs) of the nation with energy-efficient LED street lights within five years. Before tackling the replacement of street lights, EESL first enters into an agreement with ULBs/GPs, either directly or via the relevant State/UT Governments.
Since SLNP is a voluntary programme, no particular goals have been established for it. More than 1.28 crore have been installed by EESL to date. In a formal statement, the Ministry of Power stated "that LED street lights were installed in 29 States and UTs."
