Indonesia Set to Follow India in Building Toll Roads Using Plastic Waste

Coordinating Minister for Marine Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said he will follow the successful way of India to build roads using plastic waste (plastic tar road), as a mixture of material.

In addition to being more efficient, the use of plastic waste for road construction is claimed to be more robust and minimal maintenance.

Luhut said India has managed to build 1,000 kilometers (km) of roads using materials from plastic waste.

"In India, building roads by using plastic waste materials can save 10% of construction cost, India builds 1,000 km of roads and for 12 years there is no maintenance, if that's true I think the garbage problem can be solved," he said in Jakarta on Saturday (6/17).

It is planned that a pilot project using plastic waste will be conducted at Udayana University and selected roads in Bali this year. The project will be undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works and People's Housing.

Hopefully, this project will be completed next year. Thus, at the annual meeting of International Monetary Fund (IMF)-World Bank, this project can already be exhibited.
