L&T wins tunnelling contract for Indian metro

Larsen & Toubro’s construction arm has won a contract worth 10.7bn rupees (£124m) for the design and construction of two underground stations and associated tunnels on the Ahmedabad metro project in India.

The contract awarded by MetroLink Express for Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad is for package two of the project’s east-west corridor.

L&T will be responsible for underground stations at Gheekanta and Shahpur as well as the associated 3.3km of bored tunnels from Kalupur to Shahpur.

“This is a significant win in the infrastructure space and we hope that this is a sign for many such projects involving vital infrastructure that are in the offing,” said SN Subrahmanyan, deputy managing director and president of L&T.

Other new L&T wins include the construction of an iron ore berth at Paradip, Odisha, a diaphragm wall project in Andhra Pradesh and the civil and structural works for a paint manufacturing facility at Vizag, also in Andhra Pradesh.
