Govt clears Rs. 40,800-cr roads for twin states

In order to provide top-class connectivity to the twin states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has recently announced a clutch of projects worth Rs. 40,800cr. They included two express highways project from Hyderabad, one to Amaravati-Vijayawada and another to Bengaluru. Apart from this, the transport ministry has also unveiled 400 km express highway corridor in Telangana, at a cost of Rs. 16,000cr of which 210 km will be part of the 550-km stretch to Bengaluru, and 190 km, of the 270-km stretch, planned up to Vijayawada. The cost for the two segments amounts to Rs. 8,400cr and Rs. 7,600cr, respectively. This is in line with the vision to establish express highway network throughout the country. In addition, about Rs. 25,000cr would be invested in development of new national highways and improvement of the existing ones in the state, totaling to 2,500 km in Telangana, while a dry port is also being planned on the Godavari river in Telangana. A detailed project report for development of Expressways between Hyderabad and Bengaluru (550 km) and Hyderabad and Vijayawada (Amaravati 270 km) is currently underway. Under the Annual Plan 2015-16, highway construction works amounting to Rs. 900cr will be sanctioned for the State and that the amount may go upward. In its entirety, the transport ministry has decided to take up the task of building 10,000 km of roads in the next financial year.
