In order to speed up the mega Vizhinjam Transhipment Terminal project entailing an investment worth Rs. 7,500cr, Kerala cabinet in a recent move has cleared Rs. 475cr-rehabilitation package to those who would be affected due to implementation of Vizhinjam Deepwater International Terminal project. The package, with schemes to address the grievances and apprehensions of the local community, has been designed to be implemented in true spirit, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, said adding that the amount was worked out after discussions with all stakeholders of the multi-crore project, of which, the construction and operation contract has been awarded to the Adani Group. Compensation and rehabilitation of those affected due to the project would be implemented in accordance with the report of the Committee headed by the District Collector. Out of the total amount, Rs. 350cr is for land acquisition and house construction process, and Rs. 50cr for providing livelihood equipment for the locals. It may be recalled that the project is likely to affect 3,000 of the 7,876 houses spread across Poonthura-Velli coastal belt.
