Waaree Energy's 5.4 GW high-tech solar cell gigafactory in Chikhli, Gujarat, was officially opened by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi. Along with senior state ministers, prominent dignitaries attended the occasion, including Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel and Union Minister for Jal Shakti Shri C. R. Patil.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shri Joshi called the day as significant for Gujarat and India. He emphasized India's solar power capacity, which increased by 3580% from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 104 GW in 2025. He underlined that India has become a leader in renewable energy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's direction and currently holds the third-highest renewable energy capacity in the world.
In addition to bolstering India's domestic solar supply chain, the new plant is expected to increase exports of cutting-edge solar technologies. According to Shri Joshi, the capacity to produce modules has increased significantly to 80 GW, while the output of solar cells has reached 25 GW. Capabilities are predicted to increase dramatically by 2030 as a result of the government's new sourcing regulations for solar PV modules.
Mr. Joshi, praised PM Modi for initiating programs like the International Solar Alliance and the "One Sun, One World, One Grid" concept, positioning India as a global green energy leader.
Gujarat was hailed as a model state for renewable development, with 57% of its energy capacity coming from renewable sources. In line with the World Economic Forum's forecast of 170 million green jobs by 2030, the new factory is also anticipated to provide a significant number of jobs.
In his closing remarks, Joshi urged other states to follow Gujarat's lead in sustainable industrial growth.
