The state government of Himachal Pradesh, India, is working towards setting up an 880 MW mega solar park in Kaza town of Lahaul and Spiti district. The development work for the solar park has been allocated to Satluz Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL). It is a state owned company in Himachal Pradesh that is mainly into hydropower project implementation and has also diversified into solar.
The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Mr Jai Ram Thakur, speaking during the plenary session of the chief ministers at the third RE-Invest 2020, , said that the State Government had identified renewable energy potential of six GW in Chenab basin as well as the Spiti area of the State.
Jai Ram Thakur said, “Power projects has been allocated for execution to Satluz Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited, NHPC and NTPC on Chenab river basin. In addition to this, an 880 MW mega solar park has been allocated to SJVNL in Spiti area for development purpose”.
Given the Chenab basin and Spiti areas’ high energy potential, the chief minister urged the Union Government to ask Power Grid Corporation to develop an effective plan for power evacuation from these areas of the State.
The Himachal Pradesh state government has identified Pangi valley of Chamba district as another area with immense scope for investment in solar energy. The site lacks grid connectivity.
The Himachal Pradesh government is also working on a Green Gaushala Scheme, under which biogas will be produced by harnessing solar power.
