The first utility-scale, regulated, standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) project in India with a 20 MW/40 MWh capacity has been put into service in Delhi, according to IndiGrid, an Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) in the power industry.
IndiGrid's first commercial BESS project is Kilokari BESS Private Ltd (KBPL). According to IndiGrid, it has been engineered to smoothly incorporate renewable energy into the distribution level grid system, aid in grid stabilization, control peak power demand, and attend to a number of auxiliary requirements.
The project was given to IndiGrid by BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) in October 2023. BRPL, Ampere-hour Energy (AHE), Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), and other partners of IndiGrid helped it commission the project in record time.
"Battery energy storage is a key enabler of a resilient and efficient power system in India as the country moves toward a cleaner energy mix," stated Harsh Shah, CEO and full-time director of IndiGrid. “Intelligent power storage and dispatch will be crucial for preserving grid stability and maximizing the integration of renewable energy sources. In that regard, our endeavor is a step forward.”
Transmission lines, solar power, and BESS are just a few of the many assets that IndiGrid owns and manages nationwide. In recent years, it has also ventured in expansions and Greenfield projects. Six projects under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding and Regulated Tariff Mechanism for both transmission and BESS have subsequently been put into service by IndiGrid.
IndiGrid owns 41 power projects, including 49 transmission lines with a length of over 8,700 kilometres, 15 substations with a capacity of 22,550 MVA, 855 MW AC (1.1GWp) of solar generation capacity, and 450 MW/900 MWh of battery energy storage systems. Currently, IndiGrid manages assets worth more than INR 294 billion ($3.4 billion).
