Ambani's Reliance signs $1 Billion deal for Bhutan's Largest Green Energy Project

The largest green energy power project in Bhutan is set to be built by Anil Ambani's Reliance Infrastructure and Reliance Power, which recently proclaimed themselves debt-free. With the potential to bring in over $1 billion in investments, the project highlights Bhutan's geopolitical significance to India as a buffer state between the two countries. Reliance Group will enter Bhutan's renewable energy market with the development of 1,270 megawatts of solar and hydroelectric electricity.

As part of this project, Bhutan's largest solar plant, a 500 MW facility intended to produce renewable energy and aid in efforts to combat global warming, will be built. According to sources, the Indian government has approved these power projects and they are strategically significant.

Reliance Enterprises, a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and Reliance Power Ltd, will lead the project in association with Druk Holding and Investments Ltd (DHI), the commercial arm of Bhutan's government. The project will focus on renewable energy initiatives, such as solar and hydroelectric power, while investigating state-of-the-art green technologies.

Mr. Harmanjit Singh Nagi, President of Corporate Development at Reliance Power Ltd, and Ujjwal Deep Dahal, CEO of Druk Holding and Investments, signed the agreement. As part of the signing ceremony, Anil Ambani was present.
According to the agreement, a 500 MW solar project will be built in Gelephu Mindfulness City. It will be finished in two phases, each with 250 MW, over the course of the following two years. Furthermore, under Bhutan's concession arrangement for run-of-the-river facilities, Reliance Enterprises will build the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-1 hydroelectric project. Through the development of infrastructure initiatives, like as smart distribution and metering systems, this collaboration seeks to assist Bhutan's net-zero aspirations.

With a current generating capacity of 2,452 MW, the Chamkharchhu-1 project is the largest foreign direct investment by an Indian business in Bhutan's green energy industry and represents a significant milestone in the country's renewable energy efforts. "This partnership between Reliance Enterprises and Druk Holding unites both organizations' expertise in green energy and development, benefitting India and Bhutan alike," said Ujjwal Deep Dahal, CEO of Druk Holding and Investments.

Reliance Power, which has an installed capacity of 5,340 MW, and Reliance Infrastructure, which is involved in energy distribution and infrastructure projects, are extending their green energy footprint with this noteworthy project in Bhutan, thereby strengthening the Reliance Group's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
