An Agreement Has Been Signed Between Tata Power and Maharashtra for 2.8 GW of Pumped Hydro Storage

An agreement between Tata Power and the Maharashtra state government indicates the construction of two large pumped hydro storage facilities in the state, totalling 2.8 GW.

The state of Maharashtra and Tata Power, one of the biggest integrated power firms in India, have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of two sizable pumped hydro storage projects (PSP) with a combined capacity of 2.8 GW.

Tata Power plans to invest approximately INR 13,000 crore ($1,549.41 million) on these projects. The projects would be located in Shirawta, Pune (1.8 GW), and Bhivpuri, Raigad (1 GW).

"The projects will use the kinetic energy of water to provide a consistent and dependable power source. During periods of extra energy, water is pumped from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir, and during peak demand, the stored water powers turbines, producing electricity. This approach will considerably improve energy security by combining peaking and continuous power supply with other renewables like solar and wind," Tata Power added.
