The combined output of the two projects will add 3,300 megawatts (Mw) to the state's existing capacity. The Revised Estimated Capital Expenditure for the projects in the districts of Sonbhadra (Obra) and Kanpur (Ghatampur) has been authorized by the Yogi Adityanath Cabinet.

 

The Ghatampur project (1,980 Mw) is expected to cost Rs 19,006 crore, based on the Revised Estimates. Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power (NUPPL), a joint venture between UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (UPRVUNL) and Neyveli Lignite Corporation India (NLCIL), is developing it.

 

The Ghatampur project's three units are anticipated to be completed in 2024–2025, with the state receiving a 75% production share. Due to changes in prices, exchange rates, and other factors, the estimated cost of the 1,320 Mw Obra C thermal power plant was surpassed by Rs 1,300 crore, from Rs 11,705 crore to Rs 13,005 crore.

 

According to a senior government official, the state would use borrowings to cover 70% of the increased cost of Obra, with share capital covering the remaining 30%. Obra will provide all of its power generation to the state.

 

The state is increasing thermal generation at the same time to satisfy energy demand, despite being optimistic about green energy, which includes green hydrogen and solar energy. 

 

Not too long after the state's electricity usage exceeded 653 million units, UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) recorded the highest peak energy demand of 30,240 Mw. According to UPPCL Chairman Ashish Kumar Goel, plans are in place to handle the rising demand for electricity.
