NTPC to Explore Commercial Scale Green Methanol Production In India

NTPC, India's largest power generation company, is going to explore the creation of a commercial scale green methanol production facility, the Union power ministry said in a statement on December 26.

The green methanol project involves capturing carbon from NTPC power plants and converting it into a green fuel. Green methanol has a wide range of applications, including serving as a base material for the chemical industry, storing renewable electricity, and even as a transportation fuel.

It is also considered as a substitute fuel for maritime fuel applications.

“NTPC has signed a MoU with Tecnimont Private Limited, Indian subsidiary of Maire Tecnimont Group, Italy. The objective of the MoU is to jointly evaluate and explore the possibility to develop commercial scale green methanol production facility at NTPC project in India,” read the ministry’s statement.

C.K Mondal, director (commercial), NTPC said, “This project along with NTPCs under execution pilot scale green methanol project aligns with NTPC's commitment to sustainability and renewable energy, and will significantly contribute to India's energy transition.”

In August, NTPC on December 23 announced it started capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the flue gas stream at its thermal plant in Vindhyachal. The plant is designed to capture 20 tonnes of CO2 every day. At the same location, NTPC is also setting up a green hydrogen generation plant, which will use Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysers to produce 2 tonnes per day of hydrogen.

NTPC is also expanding its footprint in new business areas like green hydrogen, waste-to-energy and e-mobility. India's largest power producer is aiming for a 10 % reduction in net energy intensity by 2032.

On December 20, NTPC said the NTPC Group including joint ventures and arms crossed 3GW of operational renewable energy (RE) capacity. The NTPC Group achieved this milestone with commissioning of first part capacity of 100 MW out of 300 MW Nokhra Solar PV Project at Bikaner, Rajasthan from 00:00 hours of December 20, 2022.

NTPC group had crossed 2 GW on June 24, 2022 this year with the commissioning of its 92 MW floating solar project at Kayamkulam, Kerala.
