India Rising: The Rapid Growth of the Indian Auto Industry

As Chinese automotive brands continue to dominate global motoring headlines and strengthen their foothold in South Africa, India’s rapidly growing auto industry is quietly emerging as a major force in the global vehicle market. The expansion of Indian vehicle manufacturers and exports is increasingly reshaping South Africa’s automotive landscape.

Recent announcements by leading Indian automakers, including the return of Tata Motors to the South African passenger-car market, have highlighted India’s growing influence. Tata plans to launch a new four-model hatchback and SUV range, including the Tiago, signalling renewed confidence in the region’s automotive potential.

India has already established itself as South Africa’s largest source of imported vehicles. According to Naamsa data, imported vehicles accounted for 62.8% of South Africa’s light vehicle market in 2024, with India supplying more than 173,000 vehicles — representing over 57% of total imports. This trend reflects India’s rise as a global automotive manufacturing and export powerhouse.

From modest beginnings in the mid-20th century, India’s automotive sector has grown into the world’s fourth-largest vehicle manufacturing hub after China, the United States and Japan. In 2024 alone, India produced more than six million vehicles, driven by strong domestic demand, competitive production costs and expanding export markets.

India’s automotive journey began in the late 19th century, but the industry truly took shape during the 1940s with the establishment of companies such as Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company, now known as Tata Motors. Following independence in 1947, government policies encouraged local manufacturing and reduced dependence on imports, helping nurture domestic automakers and supplier industries.

The era also produced iconic vehicles like the Hindustan Ambassador and Premier Padmini, which dominated Indian roads for decades. Today, India’s automotive industry has transformed into a globally competitive sector, increasingly influencing markets across Africa and beyond.
