In order to establish the first electric vehicle battery recycling facility in the United Arab Emirates, Lohum Cleantech, a top company that recycles batteries for electric vehicles, has announced a partnership with BEEAH and the Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure in the UAE.
The partnership makes sense in light of the UAE's COP28 agenda, as well as how it supports emissions-free mobility with solutions that are ready for the future and is in line with the UAE's net zero by 2050 strategic initiative and circular economy policy.
Establishing an 80,000 square foot facility in the United Arab Emirates to refurbish and recycle lithium batteries is the project's main goal. The plant will recycle 3,000 tons of lithium-ion batteries a year and convert 15 megawatt hours of battery capacity into environmentally friendly Energy Storage Systems (ESS) every year. This is anticipated to cover over 80% of the current anticipated demands for managing EV batteries.
According to the company, this Joint Development Framework Agreement is a significant step toward sustainability since it expedites the country's shift to clean resources, materials, and technologies and reflects the UAE's responsibility as an energy supplier. The development is in line with the UAE's COP28 commitments, the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, and the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021–2031.
The MoEI launched the "Global EV Market" transformational project earlier this year with the goal of making the UAE a global market for electric vehicles and raising the percentage of EVs on the road to 50% of all vehicles by 2050, in accordance with the National Electric Vehicles Policy. According to a survey conducted in 2023, 70% of UAE respondents were thinking about switching to electric
A circular domestic supply of clean energy transition materials will result from the development, which marks a turning point for sustainability in the United Arab Emirates, according to Rajat Verma, Founder & CEO of Lohum. We are excited to work in collaboration with the MOEI, UAE, and BEEAH to advance low-CO2e battery waste management in the UAE and establish a global parallel supply chain for battery materials. With Lohum's high-yield NEETM recycling technology, we help the United Arab Emirates fulfill its environmental obligations. This collaboration supports our mission to assist governments and businesses in lowering their carbon footprints—not just in India but throughout the world and in all facets of the ecosystem supporting the clean energy transition.
"The Ministry will provide the support needed for the plant to succeed as part of our Global EV Market initiative that aims to increase the share of EVs to 50 percent of all vehicles on our roads by 2050," stated Sharif Al Olama, Under-Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, MoEI. The project will offer local automakers and dealers a sustainable, environmentally friendly way to dispose of EV batteries when their useful lives are coming to an end, in light of the significant increase in the number of EVs that we anticipate. It will assist in addressing the logistical and environmental issues associated with damaged or expired EV batteries. In order to promote economic growth, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has implemented a range of social, environmental, and economic incentives.
"It is critical that we implement circular solutions proactively as EVs continue to play a role in the decarbonization of the transport sector and contribute to net-zero emissions targets," stated Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of BEEAH. To address this challenge, BEEAH is pursuing a partnership with Lohum in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. Our EV battery recycling facility will help the long-term sustainability of the switch to EVs, keep waste out of landfills, and reintroduce valuable minerals and materials into the circular economy.
