Maersk, a Danish integrated container group, announced the launch of a weekly double-stacked train service between Gurugram and APM Terminals to serve the automotive industry on Tuesday. According to Maersk India, the first run of the new service, 'Automotive Express,' which was launched in partnership with GatewayRail, was practically flagged off on April 18 by Denmark's Ambassador to India, Freddy Svane.

For exports and returns with import cargo, this new rail service runs from Gurugram's Garhi Harsaru Inland Container Depot to APM Terminals Pipavav Port.

Maersk is taking a step forward in strengthening its landside transportation offering in the country with this new operation. Maersk said it is bringing a personalised solution to its customers by linking key manufacturing hubs and ports across a solid network of trucking, rail, and depots.

According to the statement, the automotive manufacturing industry uses a 'Just-In-Time' model for its parts and component supply chains, with manufacturers needing highly efficient logistics systems that can transport their raw materials and finished goods on specific schedules to ensure uninterrupted production processes.

The new train service will be capable of transporting 180 TEUs (Twenty Feet Equivalent Containers) each way and will serve over 25 customers from India's most important automotive manufacturing belts. Customers who book cargo on the 'Automotive Express' will also get priority discharge from the port, according to Maersk India, for increased reliability and to keep their supply chains on track.

In partnership with GatewayRail, Maersk operates two dedicated rail services for exports and four dedicated rail services for imports.
