Tata group to come up with electric vehicles

An electric car may soon be out from the stables of Tata MotorsBSE 2.46 % and its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover.

At the group's platform that recognizes the latest innovation-Tata Innovista, chief technology officer Gopichand Katragadda said that the electric car was an 'ongoing project'.

Group executive council member, Mukund Rajan added that Tata Technology too has 'conceptualised' an electric car and may be working with firms outside the group for the finished product.

Tata Motors has posted 9.9 per cent sales growth at 39,763 units in April compared with 36,190 units sold in the corresponding month last year. Domestic sales of Tata Motors' commercial and passenger vehicles rose 11 per cent to 35,978

units during the month compared with 32,404 units in April 2015.

The group that primarily has diesel vehicles is expected to roll out these cars in both passenger and commercial models.

Other auto majors too are on the verge of rolling out the latest in battery operated cars. Mahindra & Mahindra, the maker of E2O electric hatchback, will roll out India's first four-door pure electric car, E-Verito.

This won't be the first from Mahindra & Mahindra, which also dabbled by acquiring electric car-Reva, that was founded by Chetan Maini two decades ago.

US auto maker Tesla's battery operated cars too has piqued curiosity of many Indians, some even preferring the two year wait for the car.
